ABU DHABI : Rayudu and Faf led the Chennai Super Kings to victory in the first game of the IPL 2020 over the Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets.
After a long wait of 437 days fans worldwide got a glimpse of MS Dhoni on a cricket field when he came out during the toss.
Toss : CSK won the toss and decided to have a bowl first.
Mumbai were quick to get off the mark from the first delivery itself when Rohit punched a good length delivery from Chahar through covers. Along with him, De Kock found his rhythm too playing well on either side of the wicket. They steered to 44-0 at the end of four overs.
Trivia : MI have never won their first match in any IPL season since 2012.
When Chawla, the leggie came to Bowl at Rohit, Dhoni sent mid-on to the boundary and called long-off inside the ring which invited Rohit to take the risk and go over the fielding and that is what happened when Rohit’s shot went straight to the hands of Sam Curran. ( Dhoni’s still got it!)
Sam Curran was involved in the game again as he got the wicket of De Kock which led to a steady partnership between Surya and the new batsman Tiwary. However, in an attempt to clear the boundary Surya lost his wicket.
Faf’s fabulous work in the field had already saved boundaries for Chennai. But in a span of a few deliveries his two blinders at long-off to dismiss Tiwari and the dangerous Hardik turned the game on its head.
Krunal and an in-form Pollard were expected to take MI to 180 atleast but their dismal performance in the last seven overs where they lost 6 wickets for 46 runs reduced them to 162-9 after 20 overs.
Pattinson and Trent Boult two of MI’s new signings impressed straight away when both got a wicket each at the beginning. CSK were 6-2 at that point. It was about one good partnership and the game could have been theirs because it wasn’t a huge total.
Bumrah’s first over costed for 14 runs and that is where Faf and Rayudu began their dominance. They played spin really well where they pulled anything that was short of length and never allowed the runs to dry up by picking up the ones and twos. Both top order batsmen scored fifties and took Chennai to a comfortable position.
Trivia : This win took Dhoni’s record as captain for CSK to 100 wins out of the 161 matches played with a win percentage of 62.50.
Dhoni sent Jadeja and Curran ahead of him to “express themselves” and with two overs of spin left it was an ideal decision which paid off as the latter scored 18 (6) in the 17th over which nearly sealed the game for CSK. They required 5 in the last over and it was taken care of, by Faf as he finished proceedings by remaining not out along with Dhoni.
